IPTAR believes psychoanalytic education is the basis for all therapeutic endeavors, providing an understanding of human character as well as a framework for comprehending the interrelationships between human development, psychopathology and the technique of treatment.
Psychoanalytic understanding not only prepares one to conduct psychoanalysis, but serves as the basis for psychoanalytic psychotherapy with both children and adults. A psychoanalytic foundation enables a therapist to choose the appropriate treatment modality and maximize an individual’s potential for growth.
In addition to the value of membership in a vibrant intellectual community, IPTAR offers its members and candidates a wide range of valuable resources, including: scholarships, a comprehensive psychoanalytic library, a vital candidates’ organization, and the IPTAR Clinical Center (ICC).
Programs
The curriculum in all of our training programs begins with a contemporary Freudian perspective, and goes on to integrate recent research and analysis in the theory of object relations, the theory of the self, attachment theory, and, the widening scope of psychoanalysis..

*NY State License in Psychoanalysis (LP) Eligible Program. Candidates in Respecialization will need to be accepted into Adult Psychoanalytic Training Program in order to complete LP requirements.
Program Highlights
Training Analysis
The training analysis is central to psychoanalytic practice. By providing candidates with an experience of their own unconscious life, conflicts, and dynamics, it holds significant personal value and enables the development of self-awareness and self-knowledge.
This personal experience also serves as a means of understanding the basis of psychoanalysis in ways not possible through coursework or supervision alone, and it adds a personal, experiential dimension to the theoretical concepts and methodology of psychoanalysis. Deep conviction about the psychoanalytic process and method comes from the experience of simultaneously analyzing one’s patients and being in psychoanalysis oneself.
The analysis is essential to empathizing with patients and working in the transference and countertransference.
Supervised Psychoanalysis
Candidates taking part in the training analysis will undergo a Supervised Psychoanalysis, consisting of two complementary learning experiences:
- the weekly supervision of the candidate’s clinical work by an IPTAR Member
- a review of the candidate’s yearly written descriptions of each case’s developing analytic process.
The primary emphasis of the weekly supervision is on the development of the candidate’s clinical skills. Following the completion of a readiness interview, the candidate treats two analytic patients, each at a frequency of four times per week, under the supervision of an IPTAR Fellow. One case is supervised for a minimum of three years; a second case for a minimum of two years.
Opportunities at IPTAR Clinical Center
The IPTAR Clinical Center (ICC) provides candidates with the following opportunities:
- Experience doing psychoanalytically-oriented psychotherapy
- Supervision by IPTAR members, free of charge
- In-service training seminars and educational workshops
- Potential psychoanalytic cases
Scholarships
Enrico Jones Diversity Scholarship
Named in memory of internationally renowned psychoanalyst and psychotherapy researcher Enrico Jones (the first African-American professor in psychology at the University of California-Berkeley) these scholarships are designed to encourage people from groups underrepresented in the psychoanalytic community, to enter psychoanalytic training at IPTAR. Each scholarship provides a stipend to cover the full cost of the first year’s tuition, and may be renewed annually.
CAP Scholarship
Candidates and prospective candidates in IPTAR’s Child & Adolescent Program (CAP) are eligible for full or partial tuition scholarships.
Respecialization Scholarship
Candidates and prospective candidates in IPTAR’s Respecialization Program are eligible for need-based tuition scholarships (full or partial). Tuition remission opportunities are also available to Respecialization candidates in exchange for work in IPTAR’s administrative offices.
Adult Psychoanalytic Training Scholarship
IPTAR has developed a clinical practicum training model which emphasizes psychoanalytic clinical experience. While the coursework is provided tuition-free, candidates who participate in this program may be eligible for limited need-based grants to offset their cost-of-living. Candidates may also provide grant writing assistance to IPTAR in exchange for an hourly wage.
