Dr. Sam Semper discusses the termination phase of a psychotherapy treatment with a profoundly unrelated child who initially appeared to have little experience or faith in language as a means of communication or connection. While the treatment focused on giving meaning to the child’s fragmented and confused internal world primarily through the ‘language’ of symbolic play, the termination phase was marked by a surprising turn to language in the form of popular song lyrics that allowed for vivid expression of the child’s internalization of the therapeutic relationship. The process of separation and mourning as part of termination helped to consolidate the child’s experience of an alive language that can hold meaning and be shared with another.


Learning Objectives:

1. Participants will learn the similarities and differences between the termination process in child and adolescent psychotherapy and adult psychodynamic psychotherapy.
2. Participants will learn technical considerations in relation to termination of child psychodynamic psychotherapy.
3. Participants will learn how a child’s experience of loss, separation and mourning during termination relates to a consolidation of therapeutic gains.


Sam Semper, Ph.D. is a Supervisor and Instructor in the Child & Adolescent Psychotherapy Program at the Institute for Psychoanalytic Training and Research (IPTAR). She is an Advanced Candidate in the Adult Psychoanalytic Training Program at IPTAR. Sam is Co-president of IPTAR’s Candidate Organization and a member of the editorial board of The Candidate Journal.

Phyllis Beren, Ph.D. is Director of the IPTAR Child and Adolescent Psychotherapy Program (CAP), a Fellow and Supervising Analyst and on the Faculty at IPTAR.

Teaching Method: Lecture and clinical presentation followed by discussion with the audience.

Social Workers: The Institute for Psychoanalytic Training and Research, Inc. (IPTAR) SW CPE is recognized by the New York State Education Department’s State Board for Social Work as an approved provider of continuing education for licensed social workers #0226.

Licensed Psychoanalysts (LP): IPTAR is recognized by the New York State Education Department’s State Board for Mental Health Practitioners as an approved provider of continuing education for Licensed Psychoanalysts (P-0011).

(2) CE credits will be granted to participants who have registered, have documented evidence of attendance of the entire program and have completed the on-line evaluation form. Upon completion of the evaluation form a Certificate of Completion will be emailed to all participants who comply with these requirements.
