In 2014 Ann Steiner began photographing Anni Bergman, Anni was 96 years old. Ann wanted to understand this remarkable woman’s unflagging zest for life despite the passage of time.
Acclaimed for her success with severely autistic children and adults that other clinicians deemed untreatable, as well as with developmentally “normal” children, Anni never gave up on her patients, just as she has never given up on herself.
The importance to Anni of “…being in relation to an other…” is emphasized in her connection to her patients, work, caregivers, the people who surround her, and this photographic exchange. This body of work is a celebration of Anni and an example of resilience.
Ann Steiner’s interest in documentary photography, and specifically the documentation of the inner and outer lives of people and communities, is driven by the same forces to understand human nature that draw her to her work as a psychoanalyst. Photography has been a way of understanding and sharing this understanding with her viewers.
