INSIGHTS FOR ADULT TREATMENT GATHERED FROM CLINICAL WORK WITH INFANTS, YOUNG CHILDREN AND ADOLESCENTS
Donna Roth Smith, LCSW
Fridays, October 25, & November 1, 8, 15, 2024
2:30pm-4:00pm (ET)
Zoom
6 Contact Hours = 6 CE Credits
Clinical material from parent-infant and child treatment cases illustrating early, primitive anxieties- fragmentation, falling to pieces, falling out of the object’s mind- and early defenses, will be considered for application to the treatment of adult patients.
.
Vignettes from the instructors practice and readings will provide the opportunity to observe and think about the early development of the mind and object relations, nonverbal communication, early/primitive anxieties, and defenses, and intergenerational transmission of trauma. Concepts such as containment, holding, receptivity, transformation, and the development of a psychic apparatus for thinking, will be discussed. We will discuss what was experienced and required of the analyst in the clinical work with the parent-infant dyads and child cases, the transference/countertransference patterns and the think about how this might be useful for understanding and making use of transference and especially our countertransference with adult patients.
Exposure to child analytic treatment provides a window into the internal world and childhoods of our adult patients, as well as an opportunity to deepen our receptivity, attunement, and creativity with adult patients. The discussion will also be helpful for thinking about what is required psychologically of parents.
