“When the Body Speaks….”

The Body in the Psychoanalytic Encounter

CE Hours: 2
Teaching Method: Clinical presentation and discussion
Learning Objectives:

1. Participants will be introduced to some current psychoanalytic discussions about the body in the clinical setting.

2. Participants will learn to identify some of the ways that unconscious material (fantasies, dynamics, object relations) can be
‘spoken’ through the body (psychosomatic illness, disordered eating, conversion symptoms).

3. Participants will learn to understand and begin to work with these aspects of the treatment situation – the way in which the ‘talking cure’ must work to create new experiences of embodiment.
