Clinical/Research Externship in Psychoanalytic Studies
This externship is a unique and personalized one-year, part-time, combined clinical and research experience for doctoral candidates enrolled in programs in psychology or social work. The program is an unusual opportunity to become immersed in the study of psychoanalytic psychotherapy in both its clinical and investigative aspects. Senior faculty members serve as research advisors/mentors and students' clinical work is supervised by graduate analysts. Externs will have the use of IPTAR’s extensive psychoanalytic library, PEP CD-ROM, and be eligible to attend Scientific Meetings, yearly conferences and IPTAR Workshops.
The Research Component
Externs will utilize IPTAR’s extensive database and be part of its established research program. There are currently four major areas of inquiry. Each area of study is overseen by senior members of the IPTAR faculty who will work with university departments and will serve and advisors in formulation and carrying out dissertation projects.
The Clinical Component
Externs have the opportunity to treat patients in outpatient psychotherapy through IPTAR’s Clinical Center (the ICC) .This will include training in conducting psychoanalytically informed psychotherapy under the weekly supervision of graduate psychoanalysts. As the ICC is committed to offering patients treatment for as long as is necessary, externs are expected to continue to work with their patients for as long as is clinically indicated. The externship experience may also include supervised diagnostic testing (for psychologists, clinical and research work in the ICC On-Site School Program, and an elective opportunity to participate in an inpatient treatment program through a cooperative arrangement with Downstate Medical Center.
Seminars
Externs will be required to attend two seminars. Senior investigators, who are closely involved in each of IPTAR’s four research programs, will conduct the Psychoanalytic Research Seminar. The Clinical Process Seminar will be conduct by the Externship Coordinator and will afford externs an opportunity to present their cases on a rotating basis.
Admission Process
The Externship Program is designed for graduate students who are interested in psychoanalytic theory, training and research. The expected time commitment is approximately 16 hours per week for one year and an additional commitment to continue work with any ICC patients for as long as clinically indicated.
